Returning to the Over Easy

The next morning, I stepped into the Over Easy hoping to see that Madison was on duty, and was delighted to see that she was. Jack was right that just because she had a bank envelope doesn’t mean that she is guilty of murder, but I had no other leads so I was following this one.

I settled in at the counter in one of the single seats and Madison approached shortly after.

“Hey!” she said. “You look familiar.”

I smiled. “Yes, I’m back again. I can’t seem to stay away from this place!”

I ordered a hot tea and a bagel with cream cheese and when the order arrived, I struck up a conversation with Madison.

“I hope you don’t think I’m prying, but I haven’t seen you around here before. Are you new in town?”

She nodded. “My dad and I moved here a few months ago.” She gestured over her shoulder to her dad behind the grill. He was of average height with dark hair and was busy making orders for the people in the crowded restaurant.

“Do you have family in Coldlake Creek, or…” I took caution to not sound too eager for answers. I hope my conversation sounded casual but the slight flinch in Madison’s eyes when I mentioned family told me I had overstepped. I continued quickly. “It’s just....not a lot of people know about our little town.”

“No, no family,” she answered. She looked over my shoulder. “I’m sorry, duty calls…”

And then she was gone. I cursed under my breath and sighed. Why did the mention of family spook Madison?

I took out my phone and opened Facebook. Glancing over my shoulder to make sure there was nobody behind me who could see the screen of my phone, I typed the name “Madison” into the search bar and scrolled through the results looking for a profile photo that matched. Before long, I came on a blond, young woman named Madison Miller and selected her name.

Sure enough, Madison Miller was the Over Easy’s Madison and according to her page, she was 17 years old. Glancing over my shoulder again, I chose her Photo album but only her profile photo was inside it. Her page was mostly private. The only things I could see were new profile photos she had chosen for herself and also her “About” section.

I clicked her “About” section and scrolled down to the “Family Relationships” section. There were only two people listed here. A Daniel Miller and a Suzanne Miller. Listed as Father and Mother, respectively. I clicked on Daniel’s page and saw that he was the man behind the grill. Clicking on Suzanne’s page, I saw that Madison’s mother was a striking blond woman with large blue eyes.

I scrolled down her page and my heart fell while reading the only posts that were publicly available to read. There were dozens of posts from nearly two years ago expressing shock and remorse at Suzanne’s passing. It appeared her death had been sudden but there were no statements or comments about exactly what happened.
